Integrated Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs) in Mechanical Engineering

The 7 proficiencies instituted by the University serve as the bases in establishing the BS Mechanical Engineering Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) and Program Outcomes (POs). The Institutional Student Learning Outcomes (ISLOs) are aligned to these set of objectives and provide direction in the deployment of the Mechanical Engineering program. They are:

• Communication – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to exhibit the ability to listen, write, understand, speak, and express his/her concepts, ideas, in person and other media, coherently and successfully, to everyone. He / She should be able to master his/her communication skills as this will make him/her ideally suited for future career and leadership positions.
• Valuing and Ethical Reasoning – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to determine the diverse value systems, demonstrate a strong moral compass, exhibit resiliency, and uphold and defend ethical judgments.
• Critical and Creative Thinking – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to demonstrate and master critical and creative skills by integrating ideas concepts and synthesizing them. He / She must also create multiple possible solutions to a prompt, rather than a single exact solution to an architectural design or engineering problem.
• Civic and Global Learning – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to determine the different civic issues and partake in various community services that would promote the furtherance of the quality of life for those in need.
• Applied and Collaborative Learning – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to understand and relate Mechanical engineering to the different multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural fields of the practice. He / She must be able to work with a team, understand the perspectives of other people, arbitrate differences, and help reach conclusions as a group.
• Aesthetic Engagement – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to exhibit and master the aptitude on how to integrate various forms of arts in Mechanical engineering that would encourage creation of design with aesthetic elegance. He / She must further show how art forms can be translated and communicated in the design of built environments considering the various aspects and context in Mechanical engineering designs.
• ICT Literacy – A Mechanical engineering student must be able to demonstrate the ability to use tools of information and communication technology that will help him/her communicate his/her architectural design ideas effectively and ethically.

Within a few years after graduation, the graduates of BS Mechanical Engineering program should have:

• Demonstrated professional competencies in accordance with the scope of the global and local practice of architecture as evidenced by:
  • The sound technical designs and systems that conform with existing laws and ethical standards they produced
  • The recognition and certification they received for exemplary achievement

• Shown a commitment to life-long learning and receptiveness to new ideas and knowledge through scientific research as evidenced by:
  • The graduate degrees or further studies they pursue
  • The professional certifications they possess which are locally and internationally recognized
  • The knowledge and skills on recent technological advances in the field they continuously acquire

• Shown success in their chosen profession or career evidenced by:
  • The key level positions they hold or promotions they get in their workplace
  • The good track record they possess
  • The professional visibility (e.g., publications, presentations, patents, inventions, awards, etc.)they are involved with
  • International activities (e.g., participation in international conferences, collaborative research, employment abroad, etc.) they are engaged with
  • The entrepreneurial activities they undertake

• Directed and focused the thrust of architecture to the needs and demands of society and its integration into the social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of nation building as evidenced by:
  • Their participation in University-based community extension initiatives as alumni
  • Their contribution to the needs and demands of society through innovations/ inventions towards environmental preservation, socio-economic and socio-cultural integration for nation building
  • Their engagement in advocacies and volunteer works for the uplifting of the quality of life and human dignity especially the marginalized
