Program Description

The BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT of SHTM is a four-year degree program that prepares the students to be globally competitive leaders of the largest and fastest growing industry in the world, Tourism. The program highlights courses in business and management, hospitality and tourism, and professional concentration courses which enable student exposure to the different sectors of the vast tourism industry, as well as specialization in their chosen career paths. The program has three areas of specialization, namely: Travel and Tour Operations, Destination Management, and Events Management.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management with Concentration in Travel and Tour Operations program covers the transportation sector such as airlines, cruise ships, land transportation; and travel agencies and tour operators, focusing on their management and operations. It trains students on tour and travel management, tour guiding, airport and airline operations, crowd and crisis management, tourism marketing and promotions, food and beverage management and proficiency in Global Distribution Systems. The program is designed for students who seek careers in airport operations, travel and tour operations, international cruise line crew and flight attendants.

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management with Concentration in Destination Management program highlights the sectors of the government, non-profit organizations, and the private sector, focusing on tourism policy, planning, and development. It develops the students to be destination managers of the different niches of sustainable tourism such as ecotourism and cultural heritage tourism. Professional topics of this program include recreation and leisure management, tourism development approaches and trends, tourism data management and analytics, and sustainable tourism. 

The Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management with Concentration in Events Management program is specifically designed to prepare students to be globally competitive professionals of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) Tourism. It educates the students on the artistry and management of special events starting from concept development until the staging of the actual event. Interesting courses of the program include event production, design, lighting and technology, crowd and crisis management, event operations and logistics, and trends and issues in events management.

Program Learning Outcomes

BS Tourism Management with concentration in Travel and Tour Operations

  1. Identify and apply the knowledge and skills necessary for hospitality and tourism operations
  2. Develop and integrate a core set of business skills necessary to successfully operate a hospitality and tourism organization

  6. Integrate global distribution systems in tourism operations.

 

BS Tourism Management with concentration in Destination Management

  3. Demonstrate competence in the communication skills necessary for hospitality and tourism management
  4. Formulate business decisions in hospitality and tourism management
  5. Evaluate leadership principles necessary in the diverse and global hospitality and tourism industry
  6. Execute events for the stakeholders.

Retention Policy

Undergraduate Programs:

  1. The failing grades are 5.0, 6.0 (FA) and 8.0 (UW) in all subjects.
  2. Students who failed in one or two courses in any semester shall be given an academic warning under the supervision of the program chair/coordinator. If a freshman fails 30% of the total academic unit enrolled in the current school year, he/she will be placed on academic probation the following year.
  3. Academic probation starts in the second year level of students and they will be placed under the individual program of study (IPOS).
  4. Other than the regular Summer offerings, subjects offered during the Summer Term are those that the students failed during the regular semester. In no way students should be allowed to take advance courses.
  5. Academic probation is lifted when the students’ cumulative grade point average reaches the required minimum for the program and that the student has not failed any of the courses enrolled in the succeeding two consecutive semesters.
