“I knew I had to maintain the scholarship I had as my parents can hardly support my studies, so I made sure to be on the Dean’s List every semester,” shares Adrian Mendoza.
Adrian, who earned his degree of BS Accountancy in 2002 narrates that it was a tough time when he was in college knowing that his parents were farmers and are among the marginalized members of the society in the country. The scholarship (being part of the dean’s list) gave him and his family the opportunity to earn a degree in a reputable university, that is why he did not waste the privilege and that pushed him to dream big, pray hard, be determined and be patient in achieving his dreams.
After his graduation in 2002 and passing the CPA board exam on the same year, Adrian worked in the different accounting industries. He first worked at ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation in Quezon City as a Financial Analyst which eventually lead him to move to ABS-CBN Europe Ltd, in London UK also as a Financial Analyst. Currently, Adrian works at Bermuda Monetary Authority as the Assistant Director, Finance and Currency Operations.
Apart from his full-time job, Adrian considers his new advocacy or personal accomplishment at the moment as it ties back to his roots. He shares, “Me and my business partner have recently established Farmvestment—it is mainly on the farming business, providing employment to landless farmers. We are still a start-up company, but I am proud of this venture as this is our way of giving back to the Filipino Farmers being family of farmers ourselves. We are currently in the process of registering as a cooperative and we hope to expand our reach and help more farmers in the future.”
Achieving his dreams for his family was one of Adrian’s fulfillment in life, and that he is grateful for HAU for being part of his life’s journey. Life may not be easy when he was in college as he would only eat banana cue for lunch, thanks to the street vendors who used to have stalls between HAU and Holy Rosary Church. As he looks back, those experiences made him stronger and more determined to study well and achieve his goals.
And with that, Adrian wants to impart this message to the students of today “Know that you are blessed! Not everyone especially during this pandemic has the opportunity you are currently enjoying so do not put it into waste. Study well and be thankful!”
