Conducting it virtually for the first time, Holy Angel University’s (HAU) Communicators’ League (CommLeague) hosted the third annual regional COMMvention on May 28, 2021 via Zoom Cloud and Facebook Live.
With the theme “GRIT: OverCOMMing the Nth End of the World”, the two-part webinar was participated by schools and universities within Central Luzon, namely Baliuag University, Bataan Peninsula State University, College of the Immaculate Conception, Gordon College, Holy Cross College, La Consolacion University Philippines, Wesleyan University - Philippines, and HAU.
The first session, which was conducted in the morning, included discussions with the Octopus & Whale Founder and Chief Creative Joey Tiempo, and the person behind ABS-CBN’s golden voice Peter Musngi. Moreover, Philippine Daily Inquirer Columnist John Nery led the afternoon session.
Tiempo, in her talk, underscored the convenience of gamification or the employment of game-design components in non-game contexts. She furthered her discussion by showing an example of how an individual should track his progress toward his goal through a ‘stat sheet’.
“If work and gaming are equally challenging, why is it that we love gaming but not work? Maybe all we need is a shift in perspective,” Tiempo said. “What kind of player are you? Also, what kind of team player are you?
Musngi, withal, highlighted how the truth almost always gets lost in the communication labyrinth. He also emphasized how social media has become the Intensive Care Unit(ICU)of facts.
“Naghihingalo na ang katotohanan sa digital age. Hindi mo na alam kung alin ang tama at mali, o tama ng bahagya lang, o baka naman mali lang ng konti,” Musngi articulated. “That’s the bane of today’s very social-media-savvy generation.”
Nery, on the other hand, shared how difficult journalism is as a profession where the best obtainable version of the truth must be attained.
“It is about obtaining the truth. It’s not something that’s handed to you in a press release. It’s not something that you merely Google,” Nery accentuated. “The best journalism is arrived at through hard reporting, hard analysis.”
At the end of the assembly, winners from various competitions were announced. Bataan Peninsula State University was hailed champions in all competitions, and that helped them bag the overall title. Furthermore, Gordon College and Wesleyan University of the Philippines were announced first and second runner-up in the overall ranking respectively.
COMMvention is an annual conference which is usually held at HAU’s University Theater. The first ever COMMvention themed “LEVIOSA” procured an award of merit for Communication skills under Student entries in the 7th Philippine Student Quill Awards in 2019.
