The Communication Program of Holy Angel University hosted the National Disinformation Conference in partnership with the Disinformation and Democracy Consortium last November 20, 2019 at the PGN Auditorium.
The conference started with academic leaders’ discussion on successful and promising initiatives to fight organized disinformation. The panel members were Dr. Luis Maria R. Calingo, HAU President; Prof. Ramon R. Tuazon, Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication President; and Prof. Elin Guro, Chancellor I Research and Extension Mindanao State University in Marawi City. The program was facilitated by Gang Badoy, founder of RockEd.
Significant points raised to fight disinformation include going back to basics, upholding moral courage, valuing honor, educational reforms, and collaboration between media and academic institutions.
The fighting forward session was led by Prof. Jason Baguia of UP Cebu, and Justine Emmanuel Dizon of CLTV 36. It was facilitated by Bart Guingona of @pagbabagopilipinas. Relevant arguments presented involved consuming good media, application of research, and creating allies not enemies in fighting disinformation.
The afternoon workshops were divided into the power of social media warriors, digital security for women, fact-checking, Facebook training of trainers workshop, and digital literacy.
The conference was attended by at least 450 students from HAU Communication Program and senior high school students, Gordon College, Pampanga State Agricultural University, Immaculate Conception in Nueva Ecija, Baliuag University, Holy Family Academy, and St. Scholastica’s Academy.
The event formed part of the I Am Real: Fighting against Fake News campaign of the program and the university.
