Dear University Community,
Today, we celebrate the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, the Patron of Holy Angel University. Tomorrow, we take time off in reflection and to spend time with oiur loved ones. A few days ago, we honored the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Although believers often perceive the Guardian Angels to be at the bottom of the hierarchy of celestial beings God created, our Guardian Angels are no less glorious and magnificent than the host of other celestial beings. In the Scriptures, the most direct reference to our Guardian Angels is provided in Psalm 91, which reads: “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:11-12).
God created our Guardian Angels for the primary purpose of serving us in our needs, getting us to heaven, and drawing us to heights of holiness. They are yet another manifestation of the ever-provident care of our endlessly generous Creator who did not set creation in motion and leave it to its own devices, but who seeks each day to draw creation back toward the Divine Providence from which it came.
To scientific minds that seek to reduce the world to explainable phenomena, Guardian Angels may be so difficult to comprehend, yet they remind us that the physical world of our five senses is not the sum total of reality. Our Catechism teaches: “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him or her to life” (CCC 336). It is not unreasonable to say that Holy Angel University, as a community of believers, also has its own Guardian Angel—in fact, I dare say, a community of Guardian Angels.
One of the most difficult tasks that Holy Angel University has faced during the past couple of years is weathering the adverse impact of the K-12 Basic Education reform. With the loss of college freshmen for two years, we faced the real prospect of having to lay off as many as seventy full-time college instructors in addition to operating losses. We were not able to avert massive layoffs and weather a financial storm but also achieved very audacious milestones in academic quality, organizational excellence, contribution to countryside development, becoming a great university to work for, and faithful Catholic education. Earlier this year, we have been recognized as the Employer of the Year for Luzon. Our Guardian Angels have always been at work in our behalf.
And so, speak to and thank your Guardian Angel today. Rely upon your Guardian Angel’s intercession and allow the Holy Guardian Angel to communicate to you God’s abundant grace. And, in closing, let us all join in reciting one of the first prayers we were taught during our childhood:
Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here. Ever this day, be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
O holy Guardian Angels, guide us and protect us. Laus Deo Semper.
