Dr. Isagani R. Cruz talks on The Nature, Impact and Prevention of Plagiarism

Last December 4, 2010, the Graduate School sponsored a seminar on the nature, impact and prevention of plagiarism. Dr. Isagani R. Cruz of De La Salle University was invited as resource person.

He writes plays, essays, short stories, and biographies in Filipino and English, for which he has won numerous awards, including a SEAWRITE award, a Centennial Literary Contest award, and a Gawad Balagtas award. He has been named to the Hall of Fame of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards in Literature. He has written or edited more than thirty books.

He has been decorated by the Government of France as a Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Merite (Knight of the National Order of Merit) and by the Ramain family as Honorary Sultan of Iligan City. He writes weekly columns on books, culture, and education for The Philippine Star and BizNews Asia.

During the beginning of the seminar, Dr. Cruz explained the similarities of plagiarism to that of dengue disease, that is, in terms of nature, impact, and consequences. Then he discussed the tools and softwares available to detect and eliminate the practice of plagiarism. Finally, he offered ways and means to prevent and discourage faculty advisers/researchers and students from committing plagiarism. The seminar was attended by the Graduate School guest lecturers, full-time faculty and students.
