Kapampangan Center to Launch Macapagal Book

The Center for Kapampangan Studies will launch the book "My Lolo, Diosdado Macapagal" on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Holy Angel University.

The memoirs, written by the late President’s granddaughter Ria Macapagal Salgado-Llanes, contains intimate anecdotes and rare photographs of the late President, whose 100th birth anniversary was recently celebrated in the province.

Ms. Llanes is the daughter of former Pampanga Vice Governor Cielo Macapagal Salgado, President Macapagal’s daughter by his first wife, Purita de la Rosa.

Holy Angel University is one of the proponents of the year-round Diosdado Macapagal Centennial Celebration, which started on President Macapagal’s death anniversary last April 20 and climaxed with province-wide festivities on his birth anniversary last September 28.

The September 28 celebration was spearheaded by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

The Center led a multi-sector committee that launched the centenary with a Mass at the St. Augustine Parish Church in Lubao last April 20. It was attended by former Vice-Governor Salgado and Arturo Macapagal, son of the President also by his first wife.

According to Robby Tantingco, Director of the Center for Kapampangan Studies, the Pampanga launching of the book is another expression of the Kapampangan people’s enduring affection for the late President.

"Diosdado Macapagal made Kapampangans really proud of themselves," Tantingco said. "He made the Philippines second only to Japan in terms of economic growth, he stood his ground against US pressure, and he put the country in a respectable place among the family of nations. And he remained incorrupt, he remained a poet and he remained Kapampangan."

The book was also recently launched at Club Filipino, with former President Joseph Estrada, Senator Ramon Magsaysay, Jr., Sec. Butch Abad and others.

The Pampanga launching will start at 2 p.m. at The Blue Room, an auditorium located on the 8th floor of the new St. Joseph Hall, Holy Angel University. For inquiries, please email or text 0918 941 8599.
