The Startup Week is a nationwide-collaborative initiative by the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, QBO Innovation Hub and various private agencies, to showcase the Filipino startup community through simultaneous nationwide events.

Through the collaboration with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) Innovation Bureau, the community event, “Startup Assets: Basics of Intellectual Property Law” was organized which aims to understand the basics of intellectual property laws in the country, as well as the role of these intangible assets in a startup. The community event was attended by graduating students, faculty, researches, startups and partners of HAU-TBI.

The program started with the keynote address of Ms. Edna Marriza Santos, Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness. It was immediately followed by the Basic Intellectual Property (IP) Training presented by no other than the IPOPHL Director, Atty. Mary Grace Cruz – Yap. During the two-hour discussion, Atty. Yap was able to discuss the kinds of IP, its importance and the filing process. She also shared the importance of the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) to the university and its share in the Global Innovation Index, where the Philippines ranked 54 out of 129 economies.

Atty. Yap ended her talk with a quote, “Intellectual Property Protection is a race, be the first!”

IPOPHL and HAU is in the process of forging a memorandum of understanding in order to become one of the only 100 IPOPHL-accredited ITSO universities in the country.
