HAU Alumna awarded 'Government Civil Engineer of the Year' in Illinois, USA

Engr. Clarita Lao, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, batch 1977 at Holy Angel University, was recently awarded the "Government Civil Engineer of the Year" by the Illinois Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) on October 11, 2018. Aside from college, she was also a graduate of HAU in High School (1972), 8th honorable mention, and Grade School (1968), salutatorian.


Engr. Lao is currently the Deputy Chief of Program Implementation at Illinois Tollway, Illinois, United States. She is responsible for providing overall project management and support for multiple engineering projects from inception to completion. She has more than 37 years of combined experience in both public and private sectors in planning, programming, managing, designing, and coordinating the successful implementation of transportation projects. She has gained her Master's degree in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University.


Among her other notable achievements are the Panday Pira Award for Outstanding Achievements in Engineering, Gintong Pamana Awards Foundation, Outstanding Engineer Award, Philippine Engineers and Scientists Organization (PESO), and a fellow of the ASCE.


The Government Civil Engineer of the Year Award recognizes professional accomplishments and unique contributions to the civil engineering profession or community. It was awarded during the ASCE Annual Awards Dinner at the Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois, attended by more than 600 civil engineers and transportation professionals in the United States.
