HAU-CICT's 'Cyber Foxes' ranks 3rd in Trend Micro CTF competition

Holy Angel University - College of Information and Communications Technology's (HAU-CICT’s) Cyber Foxes Team bags the third place in the first national run of Trend Micro University Capture the Flag (CTF) online competition for information technology students on October 2, 2018. The HAU Cyber Foxes Team is composed of CICT students, namely Jerrico Cochua (Team Leader), Warren Esguerra, Inno Justin Valencia, Jaspher Ian Dingal, Jericho Diaz, and Jeremias Bulanadi.

The University CTF is the first organized contest by Trend Micro that invites and promotes cyber security among college students all over the Philippines. The game had two rounds, both conducted online: the Qualifying Round and the Final Round. The Qualifying Round was a Jeopardy-inspired Question & Answer game where participants solved problems from various categories. The top three teams in the Qualifying Round for each area were the ones that were able to advance to the Final Round. The Final Round followed an online-challenge format.

The online competition was designed to challenge its participants to solve computer security problems and/or capture and defend computer systems. Its elimination round started online on September 27 with competing schools from across the country. This is where Cyber Foxes was qualified in the top five out of the 26 participating teams.

After the efforts in researching attack and defense solutions, defending computer systems, and beating cyber-criminals, the Cyber Foxes team was able to complete the competition on time and eventually bagged the third place. “This is a rare event where college students are competing because it's a new thing in the cyberworld. This is another great achievement of our students for our university. Laus Deo Semper!” Says CICT Dean Dr. Francisco Napalit.
