President’s Message on Founders' Day 2018 | March 08, 2018

His Grace, Most Reverend Paciano B. Aniceto, Archbishop Emeritus of San Fernando and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Holy Angel University; concelebrants, our University Chaplain and alumni priests; members of the Nepomuceno family; students, faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees of Holy Angel University; friends and guests of the University: Good morning.

Today, we commemorate our founders – Juan De Dios Nepomuceno, his wife Clara Teresa Teodora Gomez, and cofounder Archbishop Pedro Paulo Santos – who not only founded Holy Angel Academy, but also helped transform Angeles town into a city through their unparalleled contributions to business, church, education, and social life of Angeleños. We remember the time when a 14-year-old boy had the audacity to ask his father to establish a new school in Angeles for him, his friends, and his teachers.

Our founders envisioned a Catholic high school where elementary graduates of Holy Family Academy could continue with their secondary education. Don Juan believed that it was the obligation of the Catholic Church to ensure Catholic children attended Catholic schools, and that he was the only one in Angeles who had the will and the resources to enable the Church to fulfill this obligation.

Holy Angel University has achieved national prominence for its accountancy, aeronautical engineering, criminology, and many other liberal arts-based professional programs leading to 26 bachelor’s degrees and 25 master’s and doctoral degrees.

Holy Angel University has become the destination of choice of students not only from Angeles City, but also from other areas of the province and the region. For the best and the brightest students of Metro Angeles, we no longer compete with local colleges but with the best universities in Metro Manila. When our Alviera campus opens, we envision a time when the best universities of Metro Manila will have to compete with Holy Angel University the best and the brightest students of Central Luzon, Ilocos Region, and Cagayan Valley who would regard HAU as their school of first choice.

We here at Holy Angel University are committed to continuing the legacy of our founders – to provide access to quality Catholic education that transforms our students into persons of conscience, competence, and compassion, all for the greater glory of God. In 2016, we became the first and only Catholic university in the Philippines and Asia to be included in the Cardinal Newman Society’s Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. Last year, we became the first and only university in the Philippines to be recognized as a National School of Character by the Washington, DC-based Character Education Partnership.

The year 2018 is the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons. True to the legacy of our founders, from the living members of the Philippine clergy and religious, our college has educated one sitting archbishop (our very own), ten priests, and one religious sister, while three priests and religious graduated from our high school. These numbers do not include the bishops, priests, and religious who have since retired or joined our Creator. We continue our founders’ legacy of not treating Holy Angel University as a private, profit-making business and we do so by spending our revenues, down to the last centavo, for our operations, services, development, and quality improvement. It is our continuing obligation to carry this legacy forward in time to future generations of students who will come here to learn.

On behalf of all administrators of Holy Angel University, it is our honor and privilege to lead this university and, standing before all of you and the descendants of our founders, we pledge our commitment to be a faithful steward of that legacy.

Thank you and Laus Deo Semper!
