HAU-CLE Faculty receive "Mandatum" from Catholic Church

The Archbishop of San Fernando, H.E. Most Rev. Florentino G. Lavarias, D.D., conferred the academic mandatum on the University’s Christian Living Education (CLE) faculty during a Mass held last September 2 at the HAU Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angel.

The mandatum is the authority given by the Catholic Church to instructors teaching the Catholic Faith in a higher institute of learning. It is also an expression of the faculty members’ fidelity to the teachings of the Church and its magisterium.

The CLE faculty are under the University’s Institute for Christian Formation and Social Integration (ICFSI), headed by its director, Mrs. Norielyn Pineda. During the Mass, they professed their Oath of Fidelity to the Church as part of the ceremonies.

In his homily, Archbishop Lavarias told the faculty "to remember your mission and the joy in upholding the faith." As teachers of the faith, he said, the CLE faculty "should become witnesses of that faith in your very lives."

In the same Mass, University President Dr. Luis Maria R. Calingo delivered a speech to the CLE faculty, in which he called the event a milestone following HAU's declaration as a Catholic university on December 4, 1981 by then Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz. Dr. Calingo said the mandatum was an affirmation of the University’s commitment to put into action the Ex corde Ecclesiae ("From the heart of the Church"), the constitution governing Catholic universities issued by Pope John Paul II.
