News and Events

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Good morning. To our beloved guests from other institutions, welcome to Holy Angel University; and to everyone, welcome to the Lecture-Forum on Peace Education which was organized and implemented by our Teacher Education Department in the College of Arts, Sciences and Education (CASEd). In particular I wish to greet our distinguished speakers this morning ─ my dear friend, the honorable Vice Mayor Vicky Vega of Angeles City, Professor Rene Romero of the Philippine Normal University, and Professor Jasmin Nario-Galace of the Miriam College Center for Peace Education.

One in spirit with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace Celebration, this forum is very timely, if only to stress the importance of peace in ourselves, in our communities, and in the larger world outside. Peace is an important pre-requisite to human development; peace is an indispensable catalyst of growth and progress, and peace is our calling as men and women created in the likeness and image of God.

Right at this very moment as we gather, our world is battered by strife and conflict. The ISIS militants have beheaded several Western nationals. Countless men were tortured, women raped, and children used as human shields in civil wars, not only in Iraq and Syria, but in various parts of the world. Domestic violence is rampant; not a few families are disintegrating, and many individuals are in the verge of personal crises.

Given this backdrop, educational institutions like ours recognize the pivotal role we play in the restoration, promotion, maintenance and enhancement of peace. Education should serve as a powerful medium and vehicle in developing a culture of life ─ one that respects the dignity of every individual and inflames the passion to work for the common good. Holy Angel University as an institution stands up to this call of duty, hence the continuing sponsorship of this forum.

In closing I wish to share with you living words from the Prince of Peace himself, the Lord Jesus Christ in John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

May you have a successful lecture-forum.

Thank you and once again, good morning.
