In a landmark event on November 7, 2023, Holy Angel University’s School of Computing (SOC) and Top Draw Animation (TDA) solidified their collaborative intentions with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony, setting a new precedent for academic-industry partnerships in the Philippines.
Top Draw Animation, established in 1998 by Wayne Dearing, a former employee of Fil-Cartoons, has carved out a niche for itself in the animation industry, particularly known for its expertise in traditional hand-drawn and Adobe Flash animation. They are a recognized force, having worked on numerous Hasbro commercials since 2006.
The signing ceremony was a confluence of TDA’s upper echelon and its creative minds, endorsing the mutual commitment to this budding alliance. Prior to the formalities, Ms. Claire Michelle Chainani, the Chief People Officer at TDA, introduced the company's impressive portfolio to the attendees, providing a window into the organization's prolific operations.
A panel discussion on the animation career pathway saw active participation from students and TDA representatives, where the latter shared personal insights into their professional journeys as animators and directors. This dialogue served as an inspiring preamble to the official MOU proceedings.
The ceremonial MOU signing occurred at the SJH Academic Hall, hosted by Ms. Louella Salenga, Program Chairperson of Computer Science. Significant, too, was the presence of students and faculty from the Entertainment and Multimedia Computing department, led by their Chairperson Jeanky Mendez, who played a pivotal role in orchestrating the event.
The MOU was endorsed by TDA’s President and CEO, Mr. Russel Hicks, alongside Ms. Chainani and Mr. Cyrus Mistry, the Management Consultant for TDA. Representing Holy Angel University, the signatories included Dr. Al Biag, Vice President of Academic Affairs; Ms. Edna Marriza Santos, Assistant to the President and VP for Organization Development; and Dr. Marlon Tayag, Dean of the School of Computing.
This partnership aims to be a nexus for knowledge exchange and practical training, with a special focus on creating OJT (On-the-Job Training) opportunities for the university’s talented students within the professional realms of Top Draw Animation. It marks a significant stride in nurturing the next generation of animators and strengthening the link between academic learning and industry experience.
