Presents and Presence on HAU Mission Day 2016

Around 460 faculty members, administrators, staff and student representatives headed to a coastal area, to a Gawad Kalinga Aeta community and to in-campus outreach venues for the University President’s Day turned Mission Day in celebration of our beloved president’s birthday last June 10.

Led by the University President Dr. Luis Maria R. Calingo himself who joined the batch going to a coastal parish -- Holy Rosary in Bulacus, Masantol, Pampanga, the first set of HAU volunteers were welcomed by the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Jobert Villacorte, former HAU Chaplain, along with PPC officers and 50 families. Painting of school buildings, facilitation of group games, conduct of medical check-up, soup kitchen and distribution of household items and school supplies highlighted the day’s affairs. Each family was also given a solar lantern that they could use in fishing and in their household.

Another batch of volunteers went to a Gawad Kalinga community in Bamban, Tarlac comprised mostly of indigenous people. Outreach efforts in the area were highlighted by the painting of houses among other activities facilitated as part of the Mission Day.

Simultaneously with the Masantol and Tarlac mission day events, in-campus outreach activities were also facilitated by volunteer HAU employees serving the invited street children, scavengers, senior citizens and single parents. Facilitation of parlor games, gift giving and blood pressure (BP) screening were some of the activities conducted for the beneficiaries.

The presents given and the caring presence of each one, coupled with the warm reception and cooperation of the communities visited, truly made the day special. The light of the solar lanterns given per family will remind each one to also be a living light to others.
