What used to be a garbage dumpsite on a thousand square meter ground in Barangay Cuayan is now transformed into a promising butterfly sanctuary. The Angeles City Ecology Park, standing on a land donated by the Angeles City Government, aims to become a model of urban ecological hub while at the same time a self-sustaining income-generating project for the local residents of Brgy. Cuayan. It is an alternative educational experience for students and environmental enthusiasts alike.
Angeles City Ecology Park is the result of ongoing partnership between government organizations (GO) and non-government organizations (NGO). Samahan ng Mamamayan ng Cuayan or SAMAKA, a Barangay Cuayan-based people’s organization is the main proponent of this project with support from the Cuayan Barangay Council, Holy Angel University and the Angeles City Government
Like a butterfly that goes through stages in its life cycle, the project was completed in a span of six years from 2001-2007, undergoing several phases/processes --- organization, mobilization, resource generation, construction, operation and preparation for sustainability. The phases draw the collaborative efforts of various sectors for its completion.
SAMAKA has opened the Ecopark for awareness and promotion in December 2007. This will also facilitate improvement of the procedures through selected trips and improve its physical features through initial earnings in time for full operation next school year 2008-2009.
