Staff Nurse (Hospital/Institutional Nurse)
  • Nursing in hospitals and related health facilities, comprises all basic components of comprehensive patient care and family health.
  • The nurse participates in all phases of patient care of acutely ill, convalescing, and ambulatory patient.
  • Nurse cares for patient in hospital or out-patient department and plans the nursing care needs of patient to be discharged.
 
Public or Community Health Nursing (PHN or CHN)
  • The National Health program of the Philippines gives emphasis on promotion of health and prevention of diseases rather than care for sick.
  • Deeper involvement and close cooperation with all members of the health team.
  • PHN’s work combines both nursing and public health practice and takes place outside the therapeutic institution.
  • Primary responsibility is the entire population as a whole.
 
School Health Nurse

  • The health program of each school is geard toward making the students and faculty understand programs
    which emphasize health promotion, prevention of disease.
  • Follow through any findings that may indicate
    a need for medical care and treatment.
  • Perform a wide variety of services including basic screening for vision,
    hearing and risk factors that would interfere with the development of a healthy lifestyle.
 
Clinic Nurse
  • Usually the doctor has been in general practice for a number of years.
    It is with him that the nurse acts as a receptionist, answer phone, does the billing, takes e-ray and ECG’s, changes dressing, gives injections and assist
    in physical examinations.
  • The nurse may also do autoclaving of instruments, keep records, order and
    store supplies, make follow-up calls and referrals for patients.
  • Must have excellent teaching and communication skills, exhibit organizational
    and leadership ability, posses good assessment skills, have good insight to anticipate needs of their patient.
 
Private Duty Nurse/Special Duty Nurse
  • The PDN is expected to follow the rules and regulations of the hospital
    regarding nursing procedures, use of procurement of supplies, medication, charting, diets, precaution techniques and others.
  • PDN is expected to adhere to the code of ethics and practice.
 
Industrial or Company or Occupational Health Nurse
  • Provides and delivers health care services to workers.
    Practice focuses on promotion, protection and supervision of worker’s health within a safe and healthy environment.
  • They need to be fully informed of their legal responsibilities and
    make use of whatever first aid and nursing measure they judge as necessary, bearing in mind their professional limitations.
  • OHN meet the needs of workers, develop and maintain the highest
    level of health and efficiency through:

    • 1. prompt treatment of the ill and injured.
    • 2. Maintenance of health and safety educational programs.
    • 3. Cooperation with other health and welfare agencies.

 
Military Nurse
  • Nursing in the Military includes services in the Army Nurses Corps, Air Force Nurse
    Corps and the Navy Nurse Corps.
  • They have the responsibility as nurses and as officers. They must be adaptable,
    able to meet challenges rapidly, exactly and safely.
  • They must utilize mature nursing judgment.
 
Public or Community Health Nursing (PHN or CHN)
  • A flight nurse is a highly trained registered nurse that normally has experience in
    not only advanced life support but also critical care.
  • The Flight Nurse performs as a member of an aeromedical evacuation crew on helicopters and airplanes - providing
    for in-flight management and nursing care for all types of patients. Other responsibilities
    include planning and preparing for aeromedical evacuation missions and preparing a patient care plan to facilitate
    patient care, comfort and safety.
  • Flight Nurses evaluate individual patient's in-flight needs and request appropriate medications, supplies and equipment,
    providing continuing nursing care from origination to the destination facility.
  • They act as liaisons between medical and operational aircrews and support personnel in order to promote patient
    comfort and to expedite the mission, and also initiate emergency treatment in the absence of a physician during
    in-flight medical emergencies.
  • Other flight nurses work with teams that land at disaster sites such as car accidents, tornados, earthquakes
    and fly the seriously injured to hospital trauma centers.
  • They perform the necessary, specialized intensive care while transporting their critically injured or ill patients by plane or helicopter
    to the appropriate health care facility.
 
Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Advanced degree (graduate study) or experience (training)
  • Expert in specialized area of nursing
  • Carries out direct client care, consultation , teaching clients, families and staff.
  • Conducts research
 
Nurse Anesthetists (USA)
  • Completes advanced education in an accredited program in anesthesiology.
  • Carries out preoperative visits and assessment.
  • Administers and monitors anesthesia during surgery under supervision of anesthesiologist.
  • Assess post-operative status of patient
 
Nurse Practitioner
  • Nurse with advanced degree
  • Certified for special area or age of client care.
  • Works in variety of health care settings or in independent practice to make health assessments.
  • Deliver primary ambulatory care.
 
Nurse Midwife
  • A registered nurse completes program in midwifery and/or passed licensure exam in midwifery.
  • Provides prenatal, postnatal care and delivers babies to women with uncomplicated pregnancies.
  • May conduct routine pap smear and routine breast care.
 
Nurse Educator (Clinical/Nurse Instructor)
  • A nurse with an advanced degree who teaches in educational or clinical settings.
  • Teaches theoretical knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Conducts research

  • Conducts research relevant to definition and improvement of nursing practice and education.

  • Conduct research, provide education
  • Serve as an adviser of consultant to institutions.
